Dr. Owen Guess was born and raised in Greensboro, NC. Owen received his bachelor’s of Social Work degree from North Carolina A&T State University in 2010. Upon receiving his degree, he pursued his Masters of Social Work Degree from Clark Atlanta University in 2011. Following his time in Atlanta, Owen spent time working as an outpatient therapist for six years. During his time he worked with pre-teens, adolescents, and adults. While working as an outpatient therapist Owen desired more information to best serve those in need of assistance. This desire led him to North Carolina A&T State Universities Doctoral Program of Rehabilitation Counseling/Counselor Education. While in this program Owen traveled to Shanghai, China and Belize. While on these trips Owen presented on mental health and fresh new ideas to best serve millennials. These trips consisted of displaying findings that video games help youth with their cognitive skills and learning through video game rhetoric. Owen completed his Doctoral Program in 2018.
Owen believes that mental health and the counseling process is a journey between the client and therapist. The therapist is a long for the ride helping the client discover strengths the client may not have ever seen within themselves. Owen believes in using technology as a way in helping the client realize strengths. Owen uses video games to connect individuals with their strengths, understanding themselves in different ways they never would have thought of. Owen utilizes Cognitive Behavioral, Dialectical Behavioral, and Person Centered approach to therapy.
